چکیده

A histochemical study of the fat body attached to the male accessory reproductive glands of the mature desert locust shows that most of the fat body is occupied by neutral fat and probably a little acidic lipid. The cytoplasmic strands between the enormous fat globules contain large deposits of glycogen and some protein. An electron-microscopic study of the mature fat body demonstrates that the synthetic machinery within the cytoplasm is sparse: the endoplasmic reticulum is scarce and in the form of isolated and flattened cisternae; there are few ribosomes; the Golgi units are rather rare and small; and the cytoplasmic bodies, which are thought to be derived from pinocytotic vesicles and probably contain precursors for carbohydrate and lipid synthesis, are few in number. Microtubules, of about 200 A diameter, and each formed as a compact helical structure with a repeating period of about 150 A, are found occasionally in the cytoplasm. Their function is unknown, but they are found closely associated with mitochondria and lipid globules. It is suggested that little synthesis takes place in the mature fat body since there is little nutrient circulating in the haemolymph, and that at this stage it acts mainly as a storage organ for glycogen and neutral fat.

Effects of different levels of locust meal (Schistocerca gregaria) replacement on growth function, survival, biochemical composition and intestinal digestive enzymes of rainbow trout fingerling (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

The present study was conducted to evaluate of different levels of locust meal (Schistocerca gregaria) on growth function, survival, biochemical composition and intestinal digestive enzymes in rainbow trout fingerling. Four experimental diets with different replacement levels of 0 (control treatment), 15 (SG15), 30 (SG30) and 60% (SG60) of fish meal with locust meal were formulated with equal p...

Studies on the Metabolism of Locust Fat Body

The successive accumulation and depletion of reserves in the fat body of insects shows that it is an important storage organ, but it seems possible that it is also an organ of intermediary metabolism, degrading some substances and elaborating others for use by other tissues. A study was made in vitro of the incorporation of certain metabolites, glycine, leucine, acetate and glucose, labelled wi...

Comparative Effects of Certain Igrs on the Carbohydrates of Hemolymph and Fat Body of the Desert Locust, Schistocerca Gregaria (orthoptera: Acrididae)

Newly molted last (5th) instar of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.), was treated through fresh plant food with 2 concentrations: high (1000.0 ppm) or low (62.5 ppm) of 3 IGRs: pyriproxyfen, tebufenozide, and lufenuron. Carbohydrate content was determined in the hemolymph and in the fat body of the early-aged, mid-aged, and late-aged 5th instar, as well as of 1and 4-d old adult f...

Isolation and characterization of nine polymorphic microsatellite loci from the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria

Because of the scarcity of polymorphic genetic markers, only a few genetic studies on the population structure of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, have been carried out. We isolated and characterized nine polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite loci. These markers were evaluated using individuals from Niger and Senegal. Seven of these microsatellite markers are also applicable to the n...

Protein Disturbance in the Haemolymph and Fat Body of the Desert Locust Schistocerca Gregaria as a Response to Certain Insect Growth Regulators

After treatment of the newly moulted last (5th) instar nymphs of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria with 1000.0 or 62.5 ppm of the insect growth regulators (IGRs): pyriproxyfen (juvenoid), tebofenozide (ecdysone agonist) and lufenuron (chitin synthesis inhibitor), protein content was determined in the haemolymph and fat body of nymphs and adults. An inhibitory action on haemolymph proteins...
